This is a guest post by Daniel Brooks, a seasoned traveller with a particular interest in smarter, more comfortable journeys. From choosing the right airport to navigating ground transfers, he shares practical advice for making every stage of a trip feel effortless.
Visitors to South Florida enjoy two large airports for inbound flights. Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). If you’re visiting Miami, you can fly into either of them to get to the city. However, each has its advantages. Your final decision should be based on your cost, transportation options to and from the airport, and your Miami vacation plans.
If a cruise is also part of the plans, the other factor that can make a difference in which airport to fly into is how long it will take to get to PortMiami. Once you know the differences, you can make an informed decision rather than possibly wasting time upon your arrival with a longer-than-planned journey to the start of your cruise vacation.
Miami International Airport vs. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
MIA is located closer to central Miami and is a major gateway for international travelers. FLL, meanwhile, serves the Fort Lauderdale area and is often convenient for travelers staying farther north in Broward County.
Here is a quick comparison:
| Factor | Miami International Airport (MIA) | Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) |
| Location | Miami | Fort Lauderdale |
| Best suited for | Miami stays and international connections | Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and some Miami trips |
| Access to Miami | Convenient for central Miami | Longer road journey into Miami |
| Access to PortMiami | Generally more direct | Requires travel south toward Miami |
| International travel | Extensive international network | Strong international and domestic service |
| Airport size | Large and busy | Generally more compact |
| Cruise travelers | Convenient for PortMiami | Can work well with advance transfer planning |
| Ground transportation | Multiple options | Multiple options |
Neither airport is automatically the right choice for every traveler. Your final destination should be one of the first factors you consider.

When Miami International Airport Makes More Sense
For travelers planning a trip in Miami or heading straight to a cruise at PortMiami, MIA can be a good place to start. And it’ll be especially convenient for folks whose destination in the city is Downtown Miami, Brickell, Miami Beach, or the cruise port.
International travelers might also prefer MIA because of its range of nonstop flights around the globe.
Being close to PortMiami can be advantageous for cruise passengers hoping to fly to the ship as quickly as possible. But as always, keep traffic and flight status in mind when you’re planning how to get to the port.
When Fort Lauderdale Airport Could Be the Better Choice
FLL makes sense if the flight option or fare is a lot more convenient. Sometimes, it’s especially so for those planning to stay in Fort Lauderdale or Hollywood, where the airport is a lot closer to the places a traveler might be staying, especially if it’s the first place they plan to visit.
The answer may also be found in the schedule they can book. If I can book a flight itinerary into FLL that eliminates an undesirable connection or an arrival time that I would rather avoid, that might be the way for me to go.
Of course, the other side of that equation is the subsequent ground segment to get into the city. Specifically, travelers going to Downtown Miami, Miami Beach, or other points generally south of the city center will face a longer ground haul from FLL than MIA.
The downside doesn’t necessarily make FLL a bad option. But finding the right transportation options is key to helping FLL travelers determine if it’s the best airport for them.
Getting From Either Airport to PortMiami
Cruise passengers have an additional factor to figure out: How to get to the ship.
PortMiami is one of the world's largest cruise ports, and anyone flying in will have to plan their airport transfer around their cruise boarding schedule.
The route from MIA to PortMiami is straight. But from FLL, passengers have to drive south to Miami, so the ride is longer and more likely to be affected by road conditions.
Either way, those who plan ahead will likely have an easier time of it. Driven Miami provides private transfers for people bound for PortMiami. A scheduled ride is often useful for people who have luggage to board for their cruise, and for passengers who are traveling with fellow cruise passengers.

What About Cost?
The cheapest airfare doesn’t always make it the least expensive way to travel.
When comparing Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, the issue to analyze is the entire trip, not just the less expensive airfare. It may take a traveler further away from their ultimate destination. For instance, a lower airfare flying into Ft. Lauderdale can be negated by higher ground transportation costs if it means a lengthy trip to a Miami hotel or cruise port. In such a case, at best there is no savings, and the cheaper air ticket was just an illusion.
On the other hand, a substantially less expensive air ticket could make flying into Ft. Lauderdale an option. As always, it depends on how much of the trip a traveler has already booked or can rearrange.
It is also useful to compare:
- Airfare and baggage costs
- Arrival and departure times
- Ground transportation
- Distance to your hotel
- Distance to PortMiami
- Traffic conditions
- Number of travelers
- Amount of luggage
Make the Airport Choice Part of the Travel Plan
When deciding between flying to MIA and FLL, you have more to consider than a simple comparison of airfare. The location, lodging, cruise itinerary, bags, timing, and mode of land transportation can all factor into your choice of airports.
Passengers heading to a cruise ship should pay special attention to land transportation because the airport is just one part of the whole trip. A booked ride out to PortMiami can bridge the gap between the flight and the cruise without adding more questions than answers.
No matter whether you opt to arrive in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, a little thinking ahead about how to get from tarmac to terra firma can make the unloading process that much easier. When you’ve got the right airport and transportation, you can worry less about the travel details and spend more time soaking up South Florida.
