Skiing in Scandinavia: exploring Norway’s best resorts

This is a guest post by Katie Jones, an avid explorer with a passion for winter sports. Each year, she heads to Norway for the perfect Christmas-time escape – Trysil, Myrkdalen and Norefjell are her favorite spots for a fun-filled family break.

If you're seeking thrilling adventures, stunning natural landscapes, and world-class skiing, Norway should be at the top of your list. From expansive forests and majestic mountains to charming villages, Norway offers a skiing experience like no other. Here, we explore three of Norway's best ski resorts that adventure seekers, nature lovers, and ski enthusiasts simply must visit.

Trysil

Trysil is Norway's largest and most popular ski resort, and for good reason. With its varied terrain and extensive facilities, it caters to skiers of all levels, from beginner to expert. The atmosphere here is relaxed, low-key, and of course, beautiful – making it the ideal spot for families, couples and lone explorerse alike. Must-try activities include the snow park’s many jumps, rails, and boxes, perfect for freestyle skiers and snowboarders.

Trysil’s ski season typically starts in December and ends in April. The resort is around 2-2.5 hours away from Oslo by car, and there are many bus links between the capital and the slopes, making it a convenient spot for those looking to take some time out of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Norefjell

Located just 1.5 hours from Oslo, Norefjell is ideal for those looking for a quick getaway without compromising on quality. It offers breathtaking views of the fjords and a diverse range of slopes – there are over 30 in total, of varying difficulties. Norefjell has the largest elevation difference of any ski resort in Scandinavia – 1010 meters from top to bottom – making it a firm favorite amongst adrenaline seekers.

Though the slopes are reason enough to stay at Norefjell, there’s plenty more to see and experience at the resort. Many visitors try their hand at mountaineering or hiking, as well as spending time in the resort’s luxurious spa facilities.

Myrkdalen

Myrkdalen, located near Voss, is celebrated for its reliable snow and family-friendly environment. With fewer crowds than some of the more well-known resorts, it provides a relaxed and serene skiing experience. The resort offers a balanced mix of green, blue, red, and black slopes, accommodating all skill levels – plus, there’s a dedicated children’s area, making Myrkdalen the perfect spot for families with young skiers.

Myrkdalen is a little further away from Oslo (around 5 hours by car) but there are still plenty of transport links nearby. Most skiers visiting from abroad fly into Bergen, which is around two hours away by car.

Why choose Norway for your ski experience?

Norway's ski resorts offer an unparalleled blend of adventure, natural beauty, and top-tier skiing facilities. Whether you're carving down Trysil's extensive slopes, tackling Norefjell's vertical drops, or enjoying the powdery paradise of Myrkdalen, Norway promises a skiing experience that will leave you eager for more.
